Proin in Dogs: Common Side Effects and Management

Proin, the short name for phenylpropanolamine, often abbreviated as PPA, is a common drug for dogs prescribed by a veterinarian. Even though quite effective, Proin may cause side effects in dogs.

Identification

Proin is a drug used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. It mainly works by effectively strengthening the sphincter tone of the urethra that often weakens as the dog ages.

Considerations

According to Marvistavet.com, Proin was used some years ago as a medication for humans but was pulled off the market because it was suspected of increasing the chances of stroke and cerebral hemorrhage. Such side effects have not been observed in dogs.

Effects

Because Proin stimulates the release of the stress hormone norepinephrine its use may elicit a ''flight or flight response." Dogs using Proin may be susceptible to side effects including increased heart rate, nervousness, restlessness, increased blood pressure and loss of appetite.

Considerations

In some cases, dogs may develop weakness, pale gums, seizures and difficulty urinating. Report any side effects to the veterinarian.

Warning

Proin should be used with caution in dogs affected by overactive thyroid, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure and heart disease. The drug may interact with ephedrine, aspirin and tricyclic antidepressants.
