Vanectyl‑P Side Effects in Dogs: What You Need to Know
Man's best friend
Vanectyl-P is the brand name medication combining trimeprazine and prednisolone. Trimeprazine offers anti-itching and cough-suppressant properties while prednisolone works as an anti-inflammatory. The medication is used in alleviating itching and coughing associated with kennel cough, non-specific coughing and bronchitis. It may also treat certain skin problems (such as eczema or dermatitis).
Drug-Specific Side Effects
Potential side effects of trimeprazine include drowsiness, sluggishness, tremors and blood disorders. Prednisolone, a corticosteroid, may cause increased thirst, appetite and frequency of urination, along with dry hair, weight gain and delayed healing of wounds.
Common Side Effects
Common side effects include dry mouth, abdominal discomfort and diarrhea, all of which usually gradually go away as your dog adjusts to the drug.
Additional Effects
This medication may also result in low potassium levels, abnormal liver enzymes, an increase in bacterial infection and osteoporosis.
Overdose Symptoms
Symptoms of an overdose include hypotension (low blood pressure), slow breathing, slowed heart rate, excessive drowsiness, seizures, pale gums and unconsciousness. Contact your veterinarian immediately.
Drug Interactions
Medications such as diuretics, cyclosporine, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), phenobarbital, anti-diarrhea medications, antacids and insulin may interact with Vanectyl-P. Tell your veterinarian about all medications you give to your dog to avoid a potentially serious interaction.
