How to Bathe a Pomeranian
1. Preparation:
- Gather your supplies, including a mild dog shampoo, conditioner, a soft towel, a comb or brush, and cotton balls.
- Brush your Pomeranian thoroughly before the bath to remove any tangles or mats.
- Trim the nails if necessary.
2. Pre-Bath:
- Place a non-slip mat in the bathtub or sink to prevent your Pomeranian from slipping.
- Fill the tub with warm (not hot) water, enough to cover your Pomeranian's belly.
3. Wetting the Coat:
- Use a cup or scoop to gently pour water over your Pomeranian's coat, starting from the head and moving towards the tail.
- Be careful to avoid getting water in the ears and eyes.
4. Applying Shampoo:
- Squeeze a small amount of dog shampoo onto your hands and lather it up.
- Gently massage the shampoo into your Pomeranian's coat, avoiding the face.
- Be careful not to use too much shampoo, as it can be difficult to rinse out.
5. Rinsing:
- Use the scoop or cup to pour warm water over your Pomeranian's coat, thoroughly rinsing out all the shampoo.
- Continue rinsing until the water runs clear.
6. Applying Conditioner:
- Apply a small amount of conditioner to your hands and work it through your Pomeranian's coat.
- Avoid the face and ears.
- Leave the conditioner in for a few minutes according to the product instructions.
7. Second Rinse:
- Rinse your Pomeranian's coat thoroughly again, making sure to remove all traces of conditioner.
8. Drying:
- Gently squeeze excess water from the coat with your hands.
- Don't rub or wring the coat, as this can damage the hair.
- Use a soft towel to pat your Pomeranian dry, starting with the head and moving towards the tail.
- Be thorough but gentle, avoiding rough rubbing.
9. Combing:
- While the coat is still damp, use a wide-toothed comb or a slicker brush to gently comb through your Pomeranian's coat.
- This will help prevent tangles and mats from forming.
10. Finish and Clean Up:
- If you prefer, you can use a hairdryer set on a low, cool setting to help speed up the drying process.
- Make sure to keep the dryer at a safe distance from the skin to avoid overheating.
- Once your Pomeranian is dry, give them a final brush and a treat as a reward for good behavior.
- Clean up any water or shampoo from the bathtub or sink.
Remember to handle your Pomeranian gently throughout the bathing process, and avoid getting water in their ears or eyes. If your Pomeranian has any skin conditions or medical concerns, consult your veterinarian before bathing them.
