What Should I Do If My Dog Eats Hand Sanitizer?

What to do if your dog eats hand sanitizer:

1. Check the ingredients. The first thing you need to do is check the ingredients of the hand sanitizer your dog ate. If it contains ethanol, isopropanol, or n-propanol, it can be toxic to dogs.

2. Call your veterinarian. If your dog ate hand sanitizer containing ethanol, isopropanol, or n-propanol, you should call your veterinarian immediately. They will be able to advise you on the best course of action.

3. Induce vomiting. If your dog ate hand sanitizer within the last hour and it does not contain ethanol, isopropanol, or n-propanol, you may be able to induce vomiting. To do this, give your dog 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide for every 10 pounds of body weight. Do not give more than 3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide.

4. Monitor your dog. If your dog does not vomit or if they vomit and then continue to show signs of illness, you should take them to the veterinarian immediately. Signs of illness include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, lethargy, and seizures.

5. Keep hand sanitizer out of reach of your dog. To prevent your dog from eating hand sanitizer again, keep it out of reach. Consider storing hand sanitizer in a locked cabinet or on a high shelf.
