What Can Drug Dogs Smell?
Drug dogs are specifically trained to detect the scent of controlled substances, such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. Their sensitive noses can even detect these substances hidden inside containers or buried underground. In fact, drug dogs' sense of smell is 50,000 to 100,000 times more acute than ours! With an olfactory bulb more than 40 times larger in proportion to their brain size than our own, their superior sense of smell makes them very effective in aiding law enforcement officers in detecting illegal drugs as part of law enforcement strategies and investigations related to illicit drug detection and suppression efforts. Additionally, they play a crucial role in drug interdiction operations involving airports, seaports, border crossings, mail and cargo inspections, narcotics investigations for suspected drug dealing activities
