What Is Snow Nose in Huskies?

Snow nose, or winter nose, is a temporary loss of pigment in a dog's nose during cold weather. The normally dark nose becomes pink, or even completely white, and may feel dry or crusty. Snow nose is more common in dogs with light-coloured fur, and is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

- Decreased blood flow to the nose: When temperatures drop, the body shunts blood to the core to maintain warmth, which means less blood flows to the extremities, including the nose.

- Changes in enzyme activity: Cold weather can slow down the activity of tyrosinase, an enzyme that is responsible for producing melanin, which gives skin and fur their colour.

- Sun exposure: UV rays from the sun can also cause the nose to lighten in colour.

Snow nose is not harmful and does not require any treatment. The nose will usually return to its normal colour once the weather warms up. If your dog's nose is excessively dry or cracked, you can apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to help soothe and protect it.
