How to Make Dog Pants

### Materials

- Fabric: Cotton is the best choice for dog pants because it is strong, durable, and easy to care for. Ripstop nylon is another option, but it may be more expensive and difficult to find.

- Thread

- Sewing machine

- Scissors

- Measuring tape

- Pins

- Elastic

Instructions

1. Measure your dog's waist and length:

- To determine the correct size for your dog's pants, you will need to take two measurements: the waist measurement and the length measurement.

- To take the waist measurement, wrap a measuring tape around your dog's waist just behind their front legs. Be sure to measure snugly, but not too tightly.

- To take the length measurement, measure from the top of your dog's back to the base of their tail.

2. Add seam allowances to your measurements.

- After taking your dog's measurements, you will need to add seam allowances to each measurement.

- For the waist measurement, add 1 inch to each side. For example, if your dog's waist measures 18 inches, you will need to add 1 inch to each side, making the total width 20 inches.

- For the length measurement, add 2 inches to the measurement you took.

3. Cut your fabric.

- Once you have added the seam allowances, you can cut your fabric.

- Cut two rectangles of fabric, each measuring the width of your dog's waist (plus the seam allowances) by the length of your dog's back (plus the seam allowance).

4. Sew the side seams.

- Pin the right sides of the fabric pieces together along the side seams, matching up the raw edges.

- Stitch the side seams together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

5. Sew the waistline seam.

- Fold one inch down on one of the pant legs and press it down.

- Fold another 1 inch down and stitch in place to create a casing for the elastic.

- Cut elastic the same measurement as the waist measurement taken of the dog.

- Thread the elastic through the casing and stitch in place.

6. Sew the hem.

- Fold one inch down on the bottom of the pant legs and press it down.

- Fold another one inch down and stitch in place to create a hem.

7. Embellish your dog's pants

- You can embellish your dog's pants with a variety of trimmings, such as rickrack, bias tape, or appliques.

8. Try on the dog pants.

- Put the pants on your dog and adjust the fit as needed.

Tips

- When choosing fabric, consider your dog's lifestyle and activity level. If your dog is very active, you may want to choose a more durable fabric, such as ripstop nylon.

- If your dog is between sizes, it is better to err on the side of caution and make the pants a little bit too big. You can always take them in if they are too big, but it is difficult to make them bigger if they are too small.

- If your dog gets dirty or wet, you can put the pants in the washing machine on cold. Tumble dry on low.

- Be sure to supervise your dog when they are wearing the pants to make sure that they do not chew on them or get them caught on anything.
