Just Adopted a Pet? 9 Essential Steps to Start Right
Congratulations on your decision to get a new furry friend, and actually taking the steps to get one.
Getting a new pet is fun and exciting. Your new furry friend is here to stay with you. However, it is a lot of responsibilities not just the fun part.
Having a new pet means more responsibilities for you. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be too much of a drag for you. In fact, as you get used to it, it becomes less stressful and blends right in with your daily routines.
In this article, we are going to share with you 9 things you should do after adopting a new pet to your home.
Pet-proof Your Home:
The first thing you should do before bringing your new pet home is to pet-proof your home so you don’t end up having a lot of mess to deal with as your new pet tries to get accustomed to its new home. It will also save your pet from getting injured. We made a nice post about pet-proofing your home. You can read it here.

Get Pet Supplies:
The next step is to get pet supplies for your special furry friend. Pet supplies include pet food, pet treats, pet beddings, pet toys, pet blankets, collar, leash, food & water bowls, hairbrush, nail clippers, pet toothbrush & toothpaste, first aid supplies, and litter box. These are the basic things you would need. But you can buy more as you go along according to the needs of your pet.
Set up Your Pet’s Personal Space:
Create a personal space for your new furry friend. You have set up a quiet space for your pet as it is new to the environment and needs a place to feel safe and secured. Put up the pet’s beddings, food bowl, and water bowl in the safe space. Don’t bother your pet much in its personal safe space.
Pet Collar:
If you haven’t already decided on a name for your pet, this would be a good time for you to do so. It will be a good idea to get your pet a new collar with its name on it. We highly recommend getting a tracking chip or GPS tracker embedded on your new furry friend’s collar. Have a GPS tracker that works easily with your mobile phone so you know where your pet is at all times.
Introduce to Family & Friends:
Now is a good chance to introduce your new furry friend to your social circle. Introduce your pet to your friends, family members, co-workers, and your favorite neighbor, Mr. Sam. Introduce your pet to your circle will help reduce its anxiety towards interacting with them.
Vet Visit:
As a new pet owner, you have to take your pet to a veterinarian to get your new furry friend looked at to ensure that everything is well. Before adopting your new pet, ensure that you enquire about the vaccination history of your pet. Be up-to-date with all its vaccinations.
Show Your Dog Around:
Take your new furry friend and show it around its new home, the neighborhood, the environment. It helps it get familiar with the new place and will make it easier for it to move around.
Set up a Budget For Your Pet:
Having a pet incurs its costs. So, you have to put your new furry friend inside the budget. The pets budget is mostly for pet supplies and veterinary visits. You can also buy insurance for your pet if that is something you would like.
Pet Training:
It is important to initiate pet training as soon as possible. Potty training is especially very important to new pets. You can read more about pet training in this article.
