Protect Your Pet: Essential Fire-Proofing Tips for a Safer Home

A fire outbreak is a common phenomenon or occurrence. In 2018, 1,318,500 cases of residential fire outbreaks were recorded which were a result of cooking, smoking, faulty electronics, open flames, and carelessness.  When there is a fire outbreak, less attention is being paid to pets and they end up dying in the fire or because of lack of oxygen owing to the smoke.

Protect Your Pet: Essential Fire-Proofing Tips for a Safer Home

In this article, we are going to share with you some pointers on measures you can take to save your pet in case of a fire outbreak.

1. Routine Checking of Electrical Fitting

You should always check your electrical fittings at least once a month to look for leaks, worn out or exposed wires. You should also check the outlets to ensure that they are properly covered. If you can’t do it by yourself or don’t have the time, hire a certified electrician for monthly maintenance. A number of fire outbreaks are caused by faulty electrical fitting or appliances, don’t take chances. Ensure that your appliances work well.

2. Use a Smoke Detector

A smoke detector as the name implies is a simple tool that detects smoke and sounds an alarm. While it is a simple tool, it can save you, your special pet, and a lot of money. It is always advisable to have a smoke detector in your house. Service it monthly to see that it works well. Always use new batteries. Don’t use old batteries with new ones. Throw the old ones out.

3. Use Emergency Pet Card/Sticker

An emergency pet cat will let firefighters know that you have a pet in your house and they will put in efforts to save your special furry friend in case of a fire outbreak. You can get an emergency pet card from us by clicking here.

Download it, print it, and fill it out. After filling it out, place it somewhere visible, like on your front door.

4. Use an Ashtray

If you smoke, always use an ashtray to put out the cigarette butt and take necessary precautions to avoid smoking in dangerous areas of the house like the kitchen or garage where chemicals are being kept.

5. Avoid Carelessness

Carelessness must be avoided when using an open flame or electrical appliances. ALWAYS follow the manufacturers’ instruction, don’t go try something from a random comment you see on Reddit or 9gag. Most of those comments were mean to be a prank. Play it save, don’t put yourself or your pet in unnecessary danger.

BONUS:

If you can afford it, have a water sprinkler system installed inside your house to put out the fire automatically.
