How to Care for Your Pet’s Eyes: Essential Tips for Healthy Vision

The eye is an important sensory organ in the body and should be well taken care of. It allows us to see and appreciate the world around us. Without sight, we will live in darkness unable to see the beauty within our grasps.

Eyes are also very important for dogs and that is why you should give your special furry friend regular eye care to prevent eye infection and other eye problems that can eventually lead to partial or total blindness of your beloved pet.
In this short article, we are going to share with you simple eye care tips that will promote the wellbeing of your special furry buddy’s eyes that you can do at home.

Redness, swelling, excessive lacrimation, squinting, discharge, and pain usually point to an eye problem that requires immediate care and as such, the dog should be taken to a veterinarian and not be treated at home.

REQUIREMENTS FOR DOG EYE CARE AT HOME
-Clean cloth/towel
-Eyewash for dogs
-A pair of scissors
-A dog’s hairbrush

THE PROCEDURE
1. Assemble all your requirements at once. This is done to avoid having to get up from time to time to fetch items to be used. Your pet may get tired and even uncomfortable.
2. Put your special furry friend in a comfortable position. We recommend laying it down on your lap for ease of the procedure. Don’t restrain your pet too much, allow room for freedom and limited movements.
3. Check to see if there’s a lot of hair growing around the eyes. If there are, gently pull them back away from the eyes and trim them slowly with the pair of scissors.
4. After that, gently brush the hair from the eyes backward to avoid getting hair into your special friend’s eyes.
5. Damp one side of the clean cloth/towel with the eyes wash. Slowly and gently wipe the areas around your dog’s eyes. Be careful not to get the cloth into the eyes of your pet.
6. Use the other side of the cloth now. Apply eyewash to this side and do the final wiping of the eyes.

DON’TS OF DOG EYE CARE
1. Do not use cotton or tissue paper to clean your dog’s eyes. They can easily tear apart or disintegrate and get into your dog’s eyes.
2. Do not insert cloth into the eyes of your special furry friend as it can cause irritation.
3. Do not blow into your dog’s eyes to get rid of a foreign body. Insert, use a copious amount of water to get rid of it.
