Meteor Goldfish Explained: Myth, Genetics & Breeding Insights

The breed of goldfish that does not have any tail is recognized as the meteor goldfish. This breed of goldfish is surrounded with various controversies.  Even its existence is debatable and this breed had not been recognized by any reputed goldfish society and association. There are some genetic implications and restrictions that make this breed less than perfect for survival and breeding does not produce exact same patterns generation after generation. Sometimes specimen from other fancy goldfish varieties with very small and diminished tail fin is also recognized as the meteor goldfish. By this, it is clear that there is just one recognizable feature of no or very small tail for this breed of goldfish. I will try my best to explain and clarify these doubts to my best capacity.

Without any further delay here is the most controversial fancy goldfish the meteor goldfish.

Meteor goldfish info – Availability

This fish the meteor gold fish is rather a peculiar one in the whole world of fancy breeds of goldfish. Even the existence of this breed is in question and discussion and debate is going on for a long time now about recognizing it as any separate breed. Practically there is no information available against the search of meteor goldfish info or we can say that particularly clear information is not available under the heading meteor goldfish info.

Meteor goldfish info – History

There is no clear inference of any documented dates or period of development but most probably the meteor goldfish was developed along with the other fancy goldfish breeds in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The remark that I made no clarity in the development process or period is more comprehensively explained in following subheadings.

  • Meteor goldfish info. Physical features
  • Meteor goldfish info. The controversy

Meteor goldfish info – Physical features

Let us take a look at the physical features of the meteor goldfish.

The name meteor goldfish was given to this fish because of its resemblance with a falling meteor. In a falling meteor there is a spherical or elliptical mass at the center and then there is a long tail and envelope of glowing light which is the result of the burning out of the surrounding gases because of the friction presented by the atmosphere of any celestial body or earth upon entering the atmosphere.

The meteor goldfish resembles this description very closely. In meteor goldfish, as stated earlier there is no tail present. The fins are somewhat longer than other common fancy goldfish breeds. Just imagine how it would look like swimming slowly with a long back and abdominal fins and no tail. This instantly gives the impression of a very slow and very beautiful meteor floating in your aquarium.

Beautiful.

One thing I would like to highlight here that these goldfishes are found in almost all the forms of the fancy goldfish breeds. You can find then in ryukin goldfish breed pool or in oranda goldfish breed pool or even in telescope and moor goldfish breed pool. Particularly speaking a tailless ryukin goldfish with no tail is the most beautiful out of all that you can find. This is just a personal view individual opinions may differ.

Meteor goldfish info – The controversy

As I stated earlier there is no practically useful information available for goldfish info you may think that why this has been listed in the breeds of goldfish?

Well, there is no clear explanation. Actually, the tailless fish as described in the info part of this post. Physical features do occur in all the commonly recognized breeds of the fancy goldfish as a genetically inferior specimen. These specimens labeled as the meteor goldfish do not make it to adulthood or even the age requisite for the features to be clearly visible to distinguish specifically meteor goldfish from others. This happens because of the natural selection process of the survival of the fittest. As described in the sub-headline above ‘ Physical features’, the limitation of no tail in these fishes make them slower than the competition and hence the feeding and physical wellbeing always become a challenge for these in breeding tanks. Inbreeding tanks there are hundreds of juveniles are present and all are fighting for their survival. In these conditions, it is not easy to spot a meteor specimen first of all and then to take out just a couple of meteor goldfish and feed them separately is almost impossible and not economically viable for most breeders who are in the trade. Extremely small number of specimen do survive but there are no individuals claiming to have reproduced tailless goldfishes from tailless and so-called meteor goldfish. Until and unless same physical features are produced generation after generations it is extremely difficult, uncertain and senseless to recognize this type of goldfish as a separate breed of fancy goldfish. I hope I was able to get the confusion cleared.
