How to Tell When Tetras Have Babies

Tetras are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. The fry (baby tetras) are tiny and transparent initially. You will be able to see their eyes and mouth but not much else. As they grow older, they will start to develop color. The female tetra will usually give birth to about 20-50 fry at a time.

Here are some signs that a tetra is about to give birth:

- The female's belly will become very full and round.

- The female may become restless and swim around the tank more than usual.

- She may start to hide behind plants or other decorations in the tank.

- She may stop eating or eat less than usual.

If you see any of these signs, it is likely that the female will give birth within a few days.

To prepare for the birth, you should set up a separate breeding tank for the female tetra. The tank should be filled with clean, conditioned water and have plenty of plants for the fry to hide in. The temperature of the water should be between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once the female has given birth, she should be removed from the breeding tank. The fry will need to be fed several times a day with live food or commercial fry food. They should also be monitored for signs of illness or injury.

With proper care, the tetra fry will grow into healthy adult fish.
