Bison Mother Nuzzles Her Two-Day-Old Calf in Heartwarming Video

Newborn bison calves enter the world in mid‑to‑late spring, when fresh grass sprouts and trees begin to bloom. Within hours they are standing and exploring the bright, green landscape, with their mothers close by. Within a few days they can even run. A bison mother spends weeks teaching her young how to find food, water and companions, while providing constant affection.

A short Facebook Reel captures this tender bond. The massive bison leans down to nuzzle and clean her two‑day‑old, reddish‑furred calf lying on a bed of grass. The calf appears completely relaxed, moving only when the mother’s licks nudge its tiny head. Viewers were charmed, with comments like, “So sweet!”

The Bison: America’s National Mammal

In 2016 the American bison was designated the United States’ first national mammal. The U.S. Department of the Interior describes the 2,000‑pound animal as “a symbol of our American identity and one of the greatest conservation success stories of all time.”

Once abundant across the continent, bison numbers plummeted in the 19th century due to over‑hunting and habitat loss, nearly driving the species to extinction. Conservation efforts began in earnest in 1905 with the formation of the American Bison Society, led by President Theodore Roosevelt and other prominent naturalists.

Today, the Yellowstone herd has rebounded to over 5,000 individuals—a testament to successful protection. Visitors may spot them in the park, but should keep a safe distance, as close approaches can stress these majestic animals.

While pure bison are rare, many domestic cattle carry a trace of bison DNA, linking the two species.
