In the upcoming documentary Parrot Kindergarten, author and survivor Jen Taylor‑O’Connor shares how a parrot became her lifeline after escaping a cult during her teens.

Speaking with People, Taylor‑O’Connor explained that her trauma stemmed from the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). She struggled with isolation and emotional pain for years before finding solace in a feathered companion.

A New Companion

Seeking a way to reconnect with the world, she adopted a vibrant parrot she named Ellie. “Ellie gave me a voice when I was shut inside,” she said. “She reminded me that communication is a two‑way street.”

Director Amy Herdy noted, “This isn’t just a story about leaving a cult. It’s about the extraordinary bond that forged healing, and the evidence that parrots can engage in intentional communication.”

Ellie’s presence helped Taylor‑O’Connor transition from silence to conversation. “I learned that everyone is doing the best they can with the tools they have,” she reflected. “Through Ellie, I found compassion, patience, and a path to forgiveness.”

The film highlights the cognitive abilities of parrots—studies show they can recognize symbols, understand cause and effect, and even learn to use human words with intention. By placing Ellie at the center of her narrative, the documentary invites viewers to reconsider the depth of human‑animal relationships.

“Parrot Kindergarten” offers a hopeful message: that with trust and understanding, we can heal even the deepest wounds.
