Why Does My Cat Suck on Blankets?

There are several possible reasons why your cat sucks on blankets.

1. Comfort: Sucking on blankets, and other soft objects reminds your cat of when it was a kitten. During nursing, and when being cleaned by its mother, suckling on the fur around the mother’s nipples gave off hormones in pleasurable quantities. That’s why sucking can be one of the most important behaviors for developing social bonds, reducing stress, and promoting comfort and security.

2. Boredom: Suckling may be a way for cats to relieve boredom or redirect pent-up energy. If your cat is not sufficiently stimulated through play or interaction, it may seek comfort through self-soothing behaviors like suckling.

3. Oral Fixation: Some cats may develop oral fixations, which are psychological attachments to objects that provide oral gratification. It's a form of self-soothing. While it's more common in kittens, and those who were weaned too early, some adult cats can still exhibit this behavior.

4. Anxiety: Sucking on blankets may also be a sign of anxiety or stress in your cat. If your cat is experiencing changes in its environment or routine, or is feeling anxious for any reason, sucking on blankets may provide comfort and relief from stress.

It's important to note that sucking on blankets is not always a cause for concern. However, if the behavior is excessive, interfering with your cat's daily activities or social interactions, or is accompanied by other unusual behaviors, it's worth consulting with your veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying medical issues that need to be addressed.
