“Parentese,” or baby talk, is a slow, sing‑song, higher‑pitched way of speaking that helps human infants develop language. Recent research shows that cats also prefer this vocal style—provided it comes from their owner.

When owners use a high‑pitched, affectionate tone known as “pet‑directed speech,” their cats are more likely to pay attention and respond. The same tone from an unfamiliar person, however, has little effect.

Study Overview

A 2022 study published in Animal Cognition examined whether cats could distinguish between speech addressed to them by their owners and speech addressed to other humans. The research was led by Charlotte de Mouzon at Paris Nanterre University.

Sixteen cats (8 months to 2 years old) owned by students at the National Veterinary School in Alfort, France, participated. Owners recorded two phrases—“Do you want a treat?” and “Do you want to play?”—in both pet‑directed speech and normal adult speech. The same phrases were also recorded by sixteen unfamiliar women.

The recordings were played back in the cats’ homes while researchers scored reactions such as pupil dilation, ear movement, cessation of activity, or moving toward the speaker on a 0‑to‑20 scale.

Key Findings

• Cats’ attention waned during their owners’ adult‑directed speech but rose sharply when the owners switched to pet‑directed speech.
• When the same pet‑directed speech was played from a stranger’s voice, cats remained disengaged and showed no renewed interest.
• Overall, cats can discriminate not only between speech styles but also between familiar and unfamiliar speakers.

“I am fascinated,” says certified cat‑behavior consultant Amanda Caron, who was not involved in the study. “These results remind us that cats notice even subtle details in our communication.”
