Pet parents often learn to spot stress cues in their dogs and develop soothing techniques over time. A recent viral TikTok video showcased one such approach, featuring a Belgian Malinois named Tango who was visibly uneasy around flags.

Tango’s dad stepped in with a gentle, reassuring pep talk that turned the situation into a bonding moment. “All you have to do is go up and smell them, and they won’t be scary anymore,” he advised, offering comfort and a clear plan to face the fear. He concluded the conversation by promising two treats once they returned home, which earned Tango a calm, appreciative stare.

While Tango seemed soothed by his dad’s words, the question remains: do dogs actually comprehend our language? Beyond vocabulary, dogs also pick up on our emotional state. A 2017 study in Animal Cognition showed that dogs respond to chemosignals—odor cues released by humans that signal emotions. Tango’s calm reaction likely stemmed from both his dad’s soothing words and the absence of fearful chemosignals.
