Safe First Encounters: How to Approach an Unknown Dog

Sue is a pet sitter.  She is meeting Rufus and his parents for the first time.  Sue wants to make a good impression, so when the doorbell rings she runs and hugs Rufus as he enters her home. Sue is taken aback when Rufus growls at her.  She does not know how to interpret Rufus’ actions.  His parents told her he was friendly.

Dogs are loving animals but, they need to feel safe in their own space.  Humans can invade a dog’s space and make that animal feel threatened.

When you meet a dog for the first time it is important to feel out your guest.  You do not know this animal and he does not know you.  Remember, the dog is under pressure too. He does not know if he will like you, your family or your home.  Let him take his time to smell and get to know his surroundings.

You should not be too eager to run over and hug him.  It is advisable to let the dog make the first move.  Dogs love attention and if he is a dog that loves people he will come over and gesture for you to pet his head.  Do not pet the dog without permission.  Make sure his parents are ok with you petting him.

Always allow an animal to be himself.  If he feels you are too close he may bark or in Sue’s case growl at you.  He is not trying to be mean, he is just letting you know that you are crowding his space.

Do not get excited or yell if he growls.  Always remain calm and in control of the situation.  Never make sudden moves on a dog you don’t know.  Show him you are friendly by addressing him by name in a calm low pitched voice.  Maybe, you might find he wants to be friends too.
