How to Protect Your Paws if They Wear Booties

If your dog or cat wears booties while outside, this may increase the risk of frostbite or skin damage to their paws. This is because the moisture inside booties can freeze, or hot pavement and surfaces (like sidewalks) can cause burns to your pet’s tender paw pads. The moisture inside the booties can also lead to bacterial and yeast growth.

To protect your pet's paws if they wear booties, here are a few things you can do:

1. Choose the right booties. Make sure the booties are the correct size for your pet's paws and are made of a breathable, waterproof material. They should also cover the entire paw including the nails and not be too tight or too loose.

2. Check the booties regularly. Before each use, check the booties for any tears or holes that may allow moisture in or cause injury to your pet’s paws. Replace booties if they are worn or damaged.

3. Keep the booties dry. After use, make sure to dry the booties thoroughly to prevent the growth of bacteria and yeast. You can use a towel, or let them air dry in a warm, dry place.

4. Use booties only when necessary. Booties should only be used when your pet is outside in cold weather. Remove the booties as soon as your pet comes inside.

5. Apply a paw protectant. You can apply a paw protectant to your pet's paws before putting on booties. This will help to protect their paws from the elements and keep them moisturised.

6. Monitor your pet's paws. Pay attention to your pet's paws for any signs of irritation, frostbite, or burns. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.
