How to Help Your Dog During a Seizure: Signs & First Aid

Dogs can have seizures just like humans. There are certain breeds however, that may be more proned to getting seizures such as:

  1. Beagles
  2. Cocker Spaniels
  3. Boxers
  4. Border Collies
  5. Siberian Huskies
  6. Labrador Retrievers
  7. Poodles
  8. Saint Bernards
  9. Irish Setters
  10. German Shepherds
  11. Dachunds
  12. Golden Retrievers

What are the signs to look for that will alert you that your pet is having a seizure?

A-Muscle Twitching B-Loss of consciousness C-Tongue chewing (Even though he cannot swallow his tongue) D-Drooling E-Collapsing F-Foaming at the mouth

What can we do to help our pet?

  1. Don’t move your pet unless it is in danger. Maybe it is in a dangerous location. If this is the case drag him gently to safety by his hind legs. Be aware he is not in control of his faculties and he may urinate or defecate uncontrollably.
  2. Stay away from his mouth. He may bite you. Comfort your pet and let him know he is loved.
  3. Dogs can overheat when they suffer from seizures. Cool him down.
  4. Seizures can last a few seconds all the way to 5 minutes. No matter how long it lasts, your pet should be taken to the vet. Make sure to take notes of how long it lasted, what your pet ate and what you did for your pet.

What does a seizure look like?

First, the dog may collapse and become stiff. He may chew at his jaw. You may see him salivating profusely. At this point, he may start to overheat. Since he is not in control of himself, he may start urinating and defecating himself.
