Should Your Puppy Ride the Front Seat? Safety Tips & Expert Guidance

When I first brought home my first puppy, Linus, I had no idea whether a small dog could safely share the front passenger seat. 10 years of experience and countless books later, I’ve learned that the answer is a clear no – at least until you have the right safety measures in place.
How Should My Dog Ride in the Car?
1. The Front Seat
Initially, Linus was placed on the front seat because I was unaware of the risks. The front passenger seat is comparable to a small child’s seat: a sudden air‑bag deployment can be fatal or cause serious injury. That’s why professional trainers and service‑dog schools strongly advise against it.
2. The Passenger Floor Boards
For guide‑dog training, we transitioned to the passenger floor boards. This spot is low to the ground, beneath the air‑bag, and sits within the vehicle’s most protected area. Key benefits include:
- Guides dogs to ride between the driver’s legs, mirroring a human guide’s position.
- The floor board is reinforced by the car’s design to shield occupants during a collision.
- Reduced likelihood of an air‑bag impact.
While this placement lowers air‑bag risk, it does not eliminate the danger of being thrown forward in an accident. A few practical tips help keep your puppy calm:
- Secure a leash around the floor board and trap the knot near the door for stability.
- Provide a blanket and a chew toy, but monitor for inappropriate chewing.
- Reward quiet behavior and gently ignore barking until the puppy learns to remain still.
3. The Back Seat
When we added Adelle, our service‑dog pup, we followed the service‑dog school’s recommendation to ride in the back seat. A harness attached to the seatbelt keeps her from darting between seats or toward the trunk. This setup is safest when the air‑bag is absent and the harness is properly fitted.
4. The Back Seat Floor Boards
Guide‑dog trainers also encourage experience on the back‑seat floor boards, as many transport vehicles, like taxis, rely on that position. It broadens a puppy’s adaptability to different seating arrangements.
5. The Back of Your SUV
We once considered the trunk for a crate, but a discussion on crumple zones changed our view. Modern cars use crumple zones at the front and rear to absorb impact; these areas are not reinforced for occupants. Placing a puppy in the trunk exposes them to higher risk during a collision.
Below is an illustration of typical crumple zones in an SUV (yellow areas).
Where Do My Dogs Ride in the Car?
With three dogs and a 2000 Honda CRV, we allocate seats as follows:
- Stetson – rides on passenger or back‑seat floor boards.
- Linus – now secured in the back seat with a harness and seatbelt.
- Adelle – consistently rides in the back seat with a harness and seatbelt.
Key points to keep in mind:
- Just as we use seatbelts for ourselves, we should use harnesses for our puppies.
- Avoid crumple zones entirely.
- Keep puppies away from air‑bag areas.
- Guide‑dog training benefits from floor‑board seating.
While harnesses add a layer of safety, the Center for Pet Safety has been testing harness performance in real crash scenarios. We’ll review their findings in an upcoming article.
