How to Find a Lost Gecko in the House

1. Search at Night

Geckos are usually active at night and sleep during the day. Start searching at dusk when the gecko would typically be looking for food. Check any areas where it could find hiding spots during the day:

  • Under furniture

  • Behind appliances

  • Under piles of laundry

  • In closets or drawers

  • In the cracks between walls and furniture

  • Inside or behind any holes in walls or floors

  • Check all houseplant pots in or outside your house

    2. Use a Flashlight

Geckos may freeze in place if they're caught in a beam of light. Using a flashlight when you search can make them easier to spot.

    3. Remove Clutter

Geckos can easily hide in clutter. If your house is cluttered, it may be more difficult to find your gecko.

    4. Use a Trap

If your gecko is particularly good at hiding, you can try setting a trap to catch it. There are different ways you can do this:

  • Leave a small box with a few holes punched in the sides filled with some sort of bait, like fruit or insects out overnight.

  • Place a bowl filled with a little bit of water with some stones stacked in the middle. If the gecko falls into the water, the stones will provide an escape route.

  • For adhesive traps specifically made to catch geckos, place the trap in an area where you've seen the gecko or where it's likely to be. Make sure the trap isn't sticky side up, so the gecko can crawl over it. Check the trap regularly and release the gecko if you catch it.

    5. Seek Professional Help

If you can't find your gecko after a few days of searching, you can try contacting a professional. A herpetologist or animal control officer may be able to help you find your pet.
